Dentures and Partial Dentures Calgary

Complete dentures and partial dentures are forms of restorative dental care, meaning they are used to restore the normal appearance and function of your smile. This may be a means of replacing teeth lost to decay or injury and can also help patients speak and chew properly, making dentures and partial dentures an important part of your oral health.

Types of Dentures

There are different types of dentures available to match the different needs of individuals. Complete, full dentures are for patients who have lost all their teeth. These dentures sit on top of your gums and are held in place by denture adhesive.

Caring for Dentures

Although partial dentures and complete dentures are false teeth, they require cleaning and care just as your natural teeth do. To properly care for your dentures, you should:

  • Handle them gently. Do not bend them or allow any damage to occur, taking extra care when cleaning them.
  • Clean them after eating. Remove any food particles or other debris by removing your dentures and rinsing them under running water after eating.
  • Remove them for an overnight soak. It’s a good idea to remove your dentures periodically to let the tissue in your mouth recover. Taking them out before bed is a good habit. Soak them in warm water if they have metal clasps. Otherwise, use a dental cleanser to protect against bacteria.
  • Take care of your whole mouth. Dentures may need additional attention, but don’t forget the rest of your mouth. Your overall health is tied to your oral health. Gently brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria. If you still have any natural teeth, be sure to floss.

    Fit Adjustments and Relines

It’s important for your dentures to have the best fit possible. Unfortunately, you may find your false teeth not fitting as well as they used to. If this occurs, see your dentist for a reline and fit adjustment to avoid the potential for ulcers, irritation, and fungal infection. If your dentures are not fitting properly, they may be trapping food and plaque, which can lead to complications down the road.

    When to Get Dentures

There are several reasons why you might consider getting dentures, such as:

    • Missing teeth. Probably the most frequent reason for getting dentures is to replace one or more teeth. Having fewer natural teeth can cause them to wear down faster as you change your bite.
    • Eating is difficult. With missing teeth, certain food might become difficult to chew and eat. Replacing those teeth with dentures will allow you to eat normally again.
    • You are self-conscious. We all want a nice smile. If you have several missing or damaged teeth, you may be hiding your smile. Dentures will allow you to smile confidently again.
    • Chronic toothaches. If you are regularly suffering severe toothaches, your teeth may have decayed to the point that a simple filling will no longer do the job. You may need to remove one or more, necessitating partial dentures.
    • Your teeth are loose and shifting. This can be a sign of advanced gum disease, which could possibly require the teeth to be extracted.
