Wisdom tooth removal has become one of the most common dental procedures, and here at Rocky Ridge Dental we have helped hundreds of patients over the years with quick and easy wisdom tooth extractions.
Wisdom teeth are the very last teeth that will come through.
They are a set of molar teeth that come through right at the back of your existing permanent adult teeth, and they can come through at different times for everyone.
Many years ago, the later development of these additional teeth would have helped our ancestors to replace broken or missing teeth as they go through life.
Today however, with ready access to modern dental care and a very different lifestyle, wisdom teeth are generally not needed and can sometimes create more problems than they solve.
The Advantages of Wisdom Tooth Removal
There are a lot of advantages to having your wisdom teeth removed.
Primarily, wisdom teeth are removed because their presence in the mouth creates overcrowding with a patient’s existing teeth.
A lot of the time there simply is not enough space for wisdom teeth in the gumline, and as they emerge, they put pressure on the remaining teeth as they compete for space.
Over time, this results in the other teeth shifting and moving around in the gumline and often creates less aesthetically pleasing smiles as a result.
Removing the wisdom teeth at an early stage in their development helps to alleviate that problem and prevent the need for future cosmetic dentistry.
There are also other key advantages of removing wisdom teeth.
Their position at the very back of the mouth makes them hard to reach during cleaning, and they can often end up neglected or forgotten about.
This creates wider reaching oral health problems, as plaque and tartar are able to build up in the back of the mouth over time.
Another common problem is what your dentist will refer to as an “impacted” wisdom tooth.
This is where the tooth has begun to grow at an undesirable angle, usually due to a lack of available space.

Wisdom Teeth Don’t Always Need to Be Removed
Although wisdom tooth removal is extremely common, it is not necessarily always recommended.
There is a common myth that wisdom teeth should always be removed, but the truth is that if your wisdom teeth are causing you no pain and are not impacting the feel, look and hygiene of your other teeth or general oral health, leaving them alone is usually the best course of action.
Our dentists at Rocky Ridge Dental can help you make an informed decision about your wisdom teeth, and will be more than happy to assist you at your future appointment.
